Lane Keeping Assist (LKA) System

The LKA system uses vision systems, including cameras and image sensors, to detect lane markings and assist the driver in keeping the vehicle within the lane. It incorporates microcontrollers for real-time image processing and sensor fusion to provide gentle steering inputs, preventing unintended lane departures. LKA is an advanced driver assistance system that helps drivers maintain their lane and avoid unintentional lane departures. Several projects have been developed to enhance the LKA system’s capabilities, including the implementation of a live tracking mechanism to monitor traffic congestion and provide traffic analysis for future road and traffic management decisions.

This project utilizes V2X (Vehicle-to-Everything) communication, which enables all vehicles on the traffic road to communicate with the traffic authority, enhancing traffic performance and increasing road safety. The project is divided into three main components: the Vehicle Agent, the Network Layer, and the Backend System – Application Service. The Vehicle Agent consists of a microprocessor, a GSM module for internet connectivity, GPS Module for fetching vehicle location in real-time, a camera module for object detection on roads, and a LiDAR sensor to measure the distance between vehicles and pedestrians. The Network Layer acts as the middle communication between the Vehicle Agent and the backend system (road management platform), while the Backend System – Application Service uses database storage to store vehicle information and real-time data. The vehicles in the city must be distinguished using a unique identifier such as a chassis number or plate information. The deliverables of this project include the vehicle agent devices that will be installed in all automobiles in the city, and a dedicated monitoring and road management system that will be delivered to the road and transport authority for analyzing, viewing and monitoring city traffic.

Other projects focus on enhancing the LKA system’s capabilities by integrating it with other advanced driver assistance systems, such as Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) and Blind Spot Monitoring. These systems work together to provide a more comprehensive understanding of the vehicle’s surroundings, enhancing overall safety and driving efficiency. The LKA system utilizes a camera to detect lane markings and a microprocessor to analyze the camera’s data and provide feedback to the driver. If the vehicle drifts out of its lane, the LKA system will alert the driver through visual, audible, or haptic feedback.

These projects showcase the potential of LKA technology in enhancing vehicle safety, efficiency and connectivity, paving the way for its widespread adoption in the automotive industry. The use of LKA technology in different research projects highlights its ability to reduce accidents, improve energy efficiency, and enhance the overall driving experience, making it a promising technology for the future of transportation.
